Rome - Day 2

We enjoyed a lazy morning. A bit of a sleep in and a leisurely breakfast. Our last for the next 12 days as we are up at 6.00am from tomorrow on. Breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace and the views over Rome are spectacular. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera with me so I will take photos tomorrow morning.

This afternoon we met our tour guide (Marino – a Scot of Italian parentage) and the rest of our tour group. Twenty four in total – 2 from San Antonio Texas, 4 from Canada including a lovely couple from beautiful Victoria BC and 18 Aussies. After our meet and greet we headed out with an Italian guide for a two hour walking tour. Now I enjoy a walk but walking on the cobbles in 35 plus degree heat is trying. However, that said, we visited the most beautiful and interesting places and walking around Rome is such as adventure. You wander along narrow cobbled streets lined with ancient buildings and then suddenly it opens out and you are standing in a gorgeous piazza full of people, monuments, fountains, churches, bars (cafes), gelati shops and the odd obelisk. There are hundreds of fountains in Rome and now I understand why so many Italian immigrants to Australia were keen to have a small fountain in their gardens. It obviously makes them feel like home as it is at the fountains that people gather.

Tomorrow we are off to see the Pope and the Colosseum. Apparently, it is the hardest of all the days on the tour……and the predicted temperature is 38 degrees. Should be fun!!!
