Washington - a glimpse

We were ahead of schedule today so we were able to get into Washington earlier than expected. We have a big day planned for tomorrow but were lucky enough to see a couple of addition monuments this afternoon that we may have otherwise missed. Firstly we made our way to the Martin Luther King Jr memorial. From the road you walk between large granite boulders to a beautiful courtyard overlooking the water. In the centre is an opposing granite statue of MLK. On either side there are sweeping walls of marble on which are inscribed some of his more famous quotes. The gardens are beautiful.

Our next stop was the memorial to Franklin Delano Roosevelt (POTUS No.32) who was the president during the WWWII years. A number of large outdoor rooms form his memorial and many of his wise words are chiselled into the granite blocks and walls which stand amongst manicured gardens.

From both of these beautiful monuments you can view the memorial to Thomas Jefferson which is just across the basin.

Notes:
  1. Hurricane Harvey is expected to hit the coast just off Texas in the next few hours before moving onto Mississippi and Louisiana. We are visiting both of those areas but not for another week or more so we are in no danger.
  2. Scroll down as there is a post about Mount Vernon, which we visited this morning, below.
  3. The internet in both Lancaster and Gettysburg was problematic and the uploading of photos wasn't possible. I have now added photos to all posts so if you haven't already seen them you might want to scroll back even further to check them out. The Internet here in Washington is super fast and we are here for two nights so I will endeavour to get a few blogs posted.
